Below are the four methods currently used to help pinpoint users
By IP Address,
Services like Firefox rely primarily on calculating your location based on wireless access points and your current IP address. Your IP Address is a number that is assigned to your computer when it is participating in a connected network like, say, the Internet. Internet service providers often are responsible for ranges of IP addresses so many services can take your IP address and pass it through a database to then determine your location down to a fairly broad area (think to the county).

If you live in Westchester, New York and wonder how some online dating advertisements can say “find women in women in Westchester” it is because they are using your IP address to determine your rough location.

The latest version of HTML will encourage more browsers like Firefox to have geolocation as a default feature. Don't worry though, it will always be an opt-in experience.

GPS

The simplest way to calculate position is using GPS coordinates. Most modern phones are GPS-enabled, and are able to send a signal to several satellites in space that help triangulate your exact position. GPS calculations typically rely on having a clear line of sight to the sky, so they can be finicky indoors.

A new “Assisted GPS” (A-GPS) system is being used to combine GPS data will cell phone signals to help increase the accuracy of GPS in cities and indoors.

Cell phone towers

Calculating location based on cell phone towers, known as GSM localization, works much like GPS. A cell phone signal is triangulated between three cell phones towers to help determine the user's location.
